I’ve been musing on how psychotherapy can be a process of bridging – initially bridging to my client’s views, world, experience…
…and that there is a process of building bridges together – extending ourselves from either side of our different banks to see if we can meet somewhere – in the middle or either bank.
It can take courage on both sides to extend a branch, an idea, a sensation or emotion; to see if it connects with the other, or if it lands.
The other bank might be familiar or foreign in different ways.
…and of course it can be useful to land in the river, to find some rocks, stepping stones or reference points under the water.
Sometimes the bridges seem clear, prescribed, orthodox…
…and sometimes they are wild and unexpected.
